The Tradition of the Engagement Ring
The engagement ring is a result of the male desire to possess is wife and the female desire to be possessed by her husband (or betrothed). Whether this is an innate desire or a desire formed by thousands of years of influence by the flow of society is a discussion for a different time—and a different website. But the fact remains the engagement ring is, and has been, a sign of ownership. It is a way for a man to say, “this woman is mine” and for the woman to say “I am his.”
This sign of ownership is not traditionally looked upon as a negative thing. Evidences of this is found in the long-standing tradition of the engagement ring and how it is only recently that the swapping of engagement rings (for both male and female) has occurred in some European countries even though the roots of feminism have extended their way into societal movements since the 1800s.
